Full Description

Ride the quieter regions of the California Wine Country and Pacific Coast by bicycle

Inspired vistas, intimate wineries, sun-kissed hills—this is California’s celebrated Wine Country cycling landscape. The routes are ideal for biking no matter how hard or easy you want to cycle. Join us to explore valleys of world-famous vineyards, forests of soaring redwoods, perfect pastoral landscapes and the captivating Pacific Coast.

Not Your Typical California Wine Country Bike Tour

Although there are dozens of Wine Country bike tours to choose from, to us they all seem about the same. They ride the same routes, stay in the same hotels, and visit the same wineries. But at Undiscovered Country, that's not our style. We avoid the more famous and heavily traveled portions of the Wine Country and choose instead to visit the quieter and more intimate regions. The roads we ride are less traveled, the inns we choose are smaller and less prominent. And while the standard Wine Country bike tour that have been offered for decades are long on wineries and short on cycling, our tours always emphasize the rides.

Ours is clearly not your standard Wine Country tour. First of all, we avoid the Napa Valley completely—too well loved by visitors for our tastes—and restrict ourselves to the quieter parts of Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. We spend our first two nights in the great little Wine Country town of Healdsburg, perfectly located to ride the roads through the wine growing regions of Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Russian River Valley, and Chalk Hill. Healdsburg is ideal for spending a couple of days, with dozens of tasting rooms, interesting shops to browse, and great restaurants showing off the ultimate California Wine Country cuisine. And although Healdsburg has been discovered by some, it still retains that small town charm.

After Healdsburg, our next destination is the redwoods of the Russian River, in the bohemian enclave of Monte Rio. Life in Monte Rio is peaceful and unhurried. You won't find any boutique shops or restaurant chains, nor will you find any other bike tours. Here we stay on the river’s edge in a charming inn, surrounded by towering redwoods. We savor some wines from the Russian River Valley appellation specially chosen for our wine pairing dinner.

Something completely different awaits us the next day. We head to the wild Northern California Coast for our next stay: the Sea Ranch Lodge, on an undeveloped stretch of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There's nothing to see at the Sea Ranch Lodge, other than crashing waves, coastal cliffs, sea lions, and the occasional gray whale. There's nothing to do at the Sea Ranch Lodge, other than hiking the ocean's edge or watching the sun set into the ocean from your dinner table. And that's precisely the idea.

By design, this is not the typical Wine Country tour that's been around for decades. If your taste runs towards world famous hotels and restaurants, bustling tasting rooms, and the well worn roads, our tour is not for you. But if you prefer the road less traveled, the authentic communities, the landscape less touched by human hands, our Undiscovered Wine Country and Pacific Coast Tour may be just to your liking.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day One: Sunday [43-65 miles]

We all meet in the lobby of the Sheraton in Petaluma. Shuttle service is available to the nearby Petaluma Fairgrounds from the San Francisco and Santa Rosa airports. After introductions and a brief orientation meeting, we bike to an unknown boutique winery for lunch and wine tastings, then we continue through the Russian River and Dry Creek Valley appellations to Healdsburg. Dinner at a local restaurant in Healdsburg, lodging at the Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza.

Day Two: Monday [40-62 miles, 1500 feet]

Today we ride a loop that starts and ends in Healdsburg. Some of the best rated wineries are on this route, but it's the cycling that makes this route special to us. The Alexander Valley is our first destination, full of wineries and butted up against volcanic mountains. The we climb up and over Chalk Hill, known for its excellent grape growing conditions. Rolling along the edge of the Russian River Valley offers splendid vistas of vineyards and the surrounding mountains. Then it's back to Healdsburg to enjoy the rest of the day in town. Wander the plaza, browse the shops, or get yourself a massage. Dinner on your own tonight, as we stay once again at the Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza.

Day Three: Tuesday [40-55 miles]

This morning we say goodbye to Healdsburg and head to the redwoods of the Russian River. The route takes us once again along quiet vineyard roads into redwood country. We'll stop to experience a majestic old growth redwood forest, with their trees reaching over 300 feet in height, before continuing into an apple orchard region. Finally, the shaded Bohemian Highway brings us to our destination of Monte Rio, resting peacefully on the banks of the Russian River. Lodging and dinner tonight is at the Village Inn, a small but stylish inn on the water's edge, surrounded by redwoods.

Day 4: Wednesday [40-50 miles]

Today we ride through the redwoods of the Russian River to the tiny bohemian town of Cazadero. From there, we have a significant climb onto King Ridge Road, one of the greatest cycling roads anywhere. It climbs steeply through a dense redwood forest, emerging into sunlight and grassy meadows of the coast range (if climbing is not your favorite activity, the van will be there to ferry you to the top of climbs). King Ridge undulates along the crest of this range, finally plunging through the redwoods back down to the coast. Our destination is the Sea Ranch Lodge, perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Dinner and lodging tonight is at the Sea Ranch Lodge, where every room has a view of the ocean.

Day 5: Thursday [40-55 miles]

Today's route hugs the Pacific Coast along Highway One, arguably one of the most scenic roads in the world. The road is a cyclist's dream, with its smooth road surface undulating along the bluffs over the ocean's edge. There is very little development along this section of the coast, so the traffic is minimal. Bodega Bay Lodge and Spa is our home for the night, where you can enjoy the view of the bay from your patio or schedule a massage. Dinner is at the ocean-view Duck Club Restaurant, called “one of the most romantic dining spots in Sonoma County”.

Day 6: Friday [44 miles]

This morning we leave the vineyards, redwoods, and coast behind on our route back to Petaluma. Today's terrain is the classic California countryside of rolling hills, studded with sturdy oaks. This is dairy country, the source of some of the finest artisan cheeses in the world. You'll notice the happy cows at the fence lines, staring at the colorful cyclists rolling by. We'll make a stop at the Tomales Bakery, a favorite refreshment spot for local bicyclist, then turn east onto even quieter roads through hidden valleys. Other than the occasional bicyclist, there is little activity on these roads. Finally, we arrive back to the Sheraton Petaluma, where our trip ends.
